The new SUHNER SUNmic 60 micro motor drive system
One of the leading manufacturers of professional surface treatment tools and machines for over a hundred years, SUHNER now offers an innovative grinding, milling and polishing system, SUNmic 60.
The central element is an intelligent control unit with touch panel that can accept a range of micro motors and tool hand pieces depending on the application. The control part has modern features such as touch screen operation on a glass display, the option to save settings and a rotation speed regulator with tangible resistance.
Key settings are easily legible on a large digital display.
Micro motor system
The actual tools are driven by powerful micro motors whose 280 W place a lot of power in the user’s hand. The compact, brushless BL/DC motors provide an extraordinarily wide speed range of 1000–60,000 rpm and deliver a high torque. In practice, they can be compared with pneumatic technologies but do not need a compressed air supply, operate at lower energy levels and emit virtually zero noise, without exhaust air or oil mist emissions.
One further benefit is that they run virtually free of vibration. The high concentricity safeguards clean and reproducible results in all areas of operation. A special heavy-duty clamping system prevents the millers from shifting. Chuck diameters range from 2.35, 3.0 and 6.0 mm to 1/8 and 1/4 inch.
Flexible applications
The new SUNmic 60 micro motor system can be connected to a 90–240 V source, and can therefore be used anywhere in the world. It offers a large number of combinations. The tools range from straight, angle and filing hand pieces to belt grinders. The control unit can be connected to two BL/DC motors and an AC motor.
Advantage: The new control unit is compatible with available micro motors. This is a true multi-purpose tool for many applications.
The new system can be used everywhere a precision finish is desired – for instance, grinding, milling, brushing and polishing in tool and mold making; in aircraft, engine and motor building; in engine tuning; and much more. SUHNER offers a range of matching machines, tools and abrasives that have been tailored specifically to each of these applications. Also an illustrated mold making tool catalog is available.

The powerful electric motor from the latest generation are driven by high-performance lithium-ion batteries, which are the best option because of their high output, low self-discharge and the fact that they have no memory effect. This means that charging your battery is problem-free every time. The powerful battery packs have a 4.0 Ah charge capacity and work on a voltage of 18 V.
Sophisticated system

The X-56 thermal printer from Hengstler is now available with extra fonts and features to suit all applications
The Chinese language is the world’s most widely spoken, dwarfing the next most popular language, Spanish, by a factor of nearly three. Beyond China, the language is spoken in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau and Singapore, and is present extensively in countries such as Malaysia and Indonesia, not to mention sizable Chinese communities in almost all Western economies. With this in mind, incorporating the Chinese language into tickets machines found at locations such as car parks, outdoor kiosks, railway/metro stations, betting shops and ATMs, for example, can now be facilitated with Hengstler’s eXtendo XF.
To store the large GB18030 national standard master font set, which contains more than 27,000 Chinese characters, Hengstler has doubled the memory within its eXtendo XF family printers to 4 MB. In fact, both the X-56 and X-80 (the numerals represent the receipt width in millimetres) now offer larger flash and RAM. Furthermore, due to the required Unicode addressing scheme and the larger number of characters that must be stored, hardware and firmware redesigns were also implemented.
A further benefit of the increased memory means that there is no longer any limitation on the size of customer font and bitmap images that can be uploaded, thus delivering greater product functionality.
With the integral font manager, customers can upload any type of font desired (up to 10 fonts) using the upload tool that is included in the printer’s driver package. Font manager selects and matches all the characters of the font type as defined in the code page. It is also possible to select and/or deselect single characters. Hengstler only uses the font manager for licensed fonts but customers can use it to upload their own licensed or open source fonts.
As a point of note, the expanded memory also means that Hengstler is able to service languages such as Japanese, Korean, Hebrew or any other language containing proprietary character sets. Importantly, however, to avoid burdening OEM customers that do not require special character sets with the cost of expanded memory, the basic versions remain available.
The original eXtendo family of receipt type printers has been in worldwide circulation for over a decade. The successful X-56 and X-80 models enjoy a market reputation as highly reliable direct thermal print mechanisms capable of operating in environments where there are wide variations in temperature and humidity, while further benefits include compact design, accurate cutting and an extensive feature set. The need to print and cut thick paper, handle large paper rolls and detect jams are among additional capabilities ensuring the ongoing popularity of these advanced printers.

Our own Tim Daro recently presented at AFS Twin Cities Chapter meeting, The Many Ways to Market Your Foundry, in Minneapolis. The presentation covered different ways that foundries could promote themselves to current and prospective customers.
Topics included “old” methods of advertising (direct mail and trade shows), as well as the new methods of online advertising such as e-blasts, interactive e-brochures, social media such as Twitter, Facebook and especially the targeted LinkedIn groups. No. 1033 is a 500ºC (932ºF) inert atmosphere oven from Grieve, currently used for heating polymer fibers at the customer’s facility. Workspace dimensions of this oven measure 54” W x 36” D x 84” H. 60 KW are installed in Incoloy-sheathed tubular elements to heat the oven chamber, while a 10,000 CFM, 7-1/2 HP recirculating blower provides vertical downward airflow to the workload.
This Grieve oven features 8” thick insulated walls plus an aluminized steel exterior and Type 304, 2B finish stainless steel interior. The inert atmosphere construction comprises a gas pressure regulator, flow meter, pressure gauge, internal high-temperature gasket, all welded expansion connection in doorway throat, air jacket on inner oven for cooling, ½” thick cellular silicone rubber atmosphere seal, blower shaft seal, pneumatic positive latching door hardware, adjustable offset door hinges, outlet with pressure relief, interior seams all welded gas-tight plus all wall penetrations are fitted with compression fittings. A 0-1500 CFM blower pulls air through the air jacket on the inner oven for faster cooling.
Controls on No. 1033 include a digital programming temperature controller, manual reset excess temperature controller with separate contactors, recirculating airflow safety switch, paperless event recorder, SCR power controller and trace level oxygen analyzer.

The three-martini lunch was a viable business meeting venue, when I got into the ad/PR biz in 1976. Accomplished a lot and, moreover, forged solid friendships.
My old boss and our agency founder WAS the guy from Mad Men, who sold the clients and had all the great ideas. 
At 82 and retired 27 years now, he STILL drinks martinis and is sharp and quick-witted as ever.
Today, we’re lucky to see clients more than a few times, each month. Email, conference calls and the vid conference or webinar are the norm, for us and clients. One web conferencing service runs TV commercials, actually mocking business travel as arcane, costly and pointless.
Who remembers the classic United campaign, where the boss handed out plane tix to the sales guys, admonishing them to get back to direct contact with customers? Business lunches are still conducted, but the business and social sides of client relationships have changed radically.
Wonder what others are experiencing, both on the agency and client sides, as well as in the media?
We ad/PR guys invented the three-martini lunch, of course, right after the golf outing and the last-minute deadline!

Large, long or odd shaped parts present various challenges; self-contained Suhner Multi-Master flex shaft machining units provide solutions
Bulky part machining can often become very difficult to integrate into a manufacturing process, when attempting to perform multiple operations on conventional CNC machines. Limited space or axis travel, one-sided spindle or tool accessibility are common restrictions when trying to design and fit multiple tool requirements onto a rigid machine concept. In addition, cycle time demands and accessibility issues from all sides and angles can make a single tool, 3-axis CNC machine option a losing proposition.

One new solution involves compact and self-contained single tool Multi-Master flex shaft machining units from SUHNER. These units are modular in design, which means they can be positioned in any direction around a workpiece. In most cases, all operations can be performed in one cycle, thereby reducing the overall machining cycle time to a minimum. Since all tooling modules work simultaneously, the cycle time is basically determined by the longest single machining operation and not the addition of all the tools working together. There are virtually no limitations to part size and the number of tools that are engaged at the same time, with this arrangement.gid machine concept. SUHNER offers a complete spindle program with optional feed systems…pneumatic, hydraulic and CNC…available in a quill feed or slide and spindle design. Solid carbide tools permit cutting speeds up to 300 m/min in aluminum, at feed rates of 0.5 mm/rev. These rates result in very short cycle times and extended tool life.

Pictured transfer machine (Fig.1) illustrates a drilling station for an aluminum profile with 11 drilling operations. The actual machine time is 8 seconds for a roof rack railing. The machine is used in 3 shifts and produces a finished part in less than 20 seconds.
Depending on tool diameter, some of the drilling station units operate at 12,000 rpm.
A special purpose machine is shown in Fig. 2. This machine provides 33 holes in an automotive fiberglass- reinforced plastic part in less than 2.5 seconds. Years of experience and research with special tools and materials result in exeptional hole quality.
