GMTA Presents Profilator and its “Micro-Finishing” Technology at Motion + Power Technology Expo

GMTA Hard Scudding Micro-FinishingWith over 300 exhibiting companies, the Motion+ Power Technology Expo is the ideal show for gear, electric and fluid power industries. Taking place between October 15 and 17, GMTA is one of the exhibitors at the Cabo Center in Detroit, Michigan.

GMTA will feature its Profilator line of gear pointing, rounding, cutting, Scudding®, Hard Scudding®, deburring and polygon machine tools for North America. The highly modular machines are used for polygon and slot facing, shifter stop machining, chamfering and deburring of highly complex automotive and other powertrain gears. The “Scudding®” and the “Hard Scudding®” process sets the Profilator apart in the market because of its manufacturing efficiency. “Hard Scudding®” allows the machining of green and hardened gears on the same machine, using the same programs. Furthermore, it is a superior technology to skiving, the previous technology used in the gear industry.

GMTA Hard Scudding Micro-FinishingWhile Profilator GmbH & Co. KG introduced the concept of “Hard Scudding®” in 2015, it expanded scudding technology with “Micro-Finishing.” “Micro-Finishing” takes place after the Hard Scudding® process has been completed. The process takes a high quality “Hard Scudding®” part and improves its surface quality. Additionally, this is a completely “dry” machining process and requires no cutting fluids or MQL technology. The total cycle time for finishing a ring gear via Hard Scudding® and “Micro-Finishing” is approximately 64 seconds but the cycle time could be decreased by 10%, keeping it under one minute for all automotive gear rings.

GMTA Hard Scudding Profilator Micro-Finishing Machine “Micro-Finishing” technology is aimed at making at quieter gear and the superfinishing process reduces friction, increases pitting resistance and the life of gears. This process uses a high quality diamond plated tool, designed to remove only a small amount of part material. The resulting part greatly increases surface quality on the gear teeth.

GMTA Names Scott Knoy President

After 27 years as President of GMTA (German Machine Tools of America), formerly American Wera, Walter Friedrich appoints Scott Knoy as his successor to the presidency of GMTA.

Friedrich was one of the first three employees when GMTA (American Wera at the time) started in January of 1991. Previously, he worked as a project manager for Liebherr Machine Tool for 4 years and completed vocational training in toolmaking and NC programming while working for 12 years at PITTLER (now DVS Group) in Germany with whom he moved to the USA in 1983.  On January 30 of this year, he spoke with the company’s board of directors and decided to step down. The change was effective on February 8, 2019.

Since joining GMTA on July 1st, 2005 Scott Knoy has contributed greatly to the growth of the organization. GMTA is a leading supplier of machine tools, laser welding systems and parts washers to the automotive power transmission, gear and other markets in North America. Friedrich is confident that Knoy is fully prepared to handle all his new responsibilities. “From day one, Scott has proven his commitment, determination, and knowledge of the automotive and gear industries. I’m sure he will continue the company’s expansion.”

Scott Knoy is grateful for this opportunity saying, “I am honored and excited to begin this new chapter as GMTA’s president. My objective is to make sure that GMTA continues to serve our customers’ needs, while looking for new opportunities.”  Knoy is a graduate of the University of Michigan and has a master’s degree from Lawrence Technological University.

GMTA Now Represents WEMA Glauchau GmbH

German Machine Tools of America is now the  North American distributor of WEMA Glauchau GmbH. These high precision grinding machines will be shown by GMTA at IMTS 2018.

WEMA 6SU Universal Grinding Machine

WEMA’s internal grinding machines maximize operating times with more efficient and integrated procedures. A repeatedly allocable tool and workpiece headstock are guided on up to six axes with an accuracy of 0.1 μm. WEMA SI is scalable and is adapted to the clients’ needs through specific mounting for the greatest machining efficiency. Powerful drives ensure quick availability with additional work and peripheral modules reducing costly non-productive times. Available in 4 different series (S2I, S3I, S6I and S10I), it offers machining of chuck and shaft-shaped parts. In addition, the internal grinding machines are equipped with internal cylinder/ cone, internal polygons, internal screw threads, up to 4 applicable grinding tools and high rigidity through the use of cast beds/hydropol beds.

With WEMA SU, universal grinding machines are available for the complex task of three-way machining of all major workpiece sizes. The machines are equipped with external and internal grinding units. Clamping operations provide decisive efficiency and precision benefits. WEMA’s technology enables machines to perform highly complex operations, while peripheral modules permit greater flexibility. These machines’ features include up to 3 swivel axes, machining of 4 sides in one clamping operation, machining of chuck and shaft-shaped parts and external grinding wheels with a maximum diameter of 600 mm. WEMA SU also offers additional features such as: 4 insertable internal grinding tools, 4 external grinding tools and cones, polygons, etc.

The company’s external grinding machines can machine parts up to 1,500 kg with external lengths of Ø  600 mm and 2,700 mm. Grinding wheels are available in Ø 500, 600, and 750 mm. Typical workpieces include railway axles, rollers, pipes and shafts.

Assemblies of the roller bearing grinding machines feature a strict modular structure used for various operations. One is for sequential internal, external and rim machining operations. Another is for simultaneous internal and external machining operations. Other modular structures are used for external machining operations, internal machining operations and rim machining operations. Machining jobs can be carried out on single or multi-row outer rings (OR) and inner rings (IR) of diverse bearing types. Notable features on these WEMA machines include three different types of milling centers (SW3, SW6, SW10), grounding of borings and tracks of inner rings, as well as tracks and outer diameters of outer rings. Outside rings have a diameter of approximately 300 mm to 900 mm. Shoulders, rims, etc can also be ground and different grinding operations can be performed in sequential or simultaneous grinding procedures.

Although the company’s grinding machines cover a wide range of possible applications,  they also build and design grinding machines to order ranging from more or less customized adaptations to complete designs of the machine.

GMTA Names Dan Thomas New Project Manager

Dan Thomas, GMTA Project ManagerAnn Arbor, Michigan – German Machine Tools of America (GMTA) today announces the appointment of Dan Thomas as Project Manager for this major supplier of various machine tools, lasers and parts washers to the North American automotive, off-highway, heavy equipment and other power transmission markets.

Samag Machine Tools Now Available in North America from GMTA

Ann Arbor, Michigan – Now available from German Machine Tools of America (GMTA), a full line of Samag machining centers, including multi-spindle, horizontal machining centers, deep hole drilling machines and combination milling/drilling machines, is offered for the North American market.

Samag, based in Saalfeld, Germany, with offices worldwide, engineers and builds a variety of multi-spindle machines, including the MFZ Series for large workpieces, the smaller, modular WBM Series for up to six spindle deep drilling and the combination TFZ Series, which offers users the ability to bore and mill complex cubical workpieces on four sides with a single clamping. On the largest standard machine, large scale moldmaking is possible, with a maximum drilling depth of 2300mm (over 90”), 65mm (over 2-1/2”) bore and a 50-ton capacity work table.

The company also supplies complete turnkey operations, including robotic articulation, parts handlers and transfer mechanisms for high-production work such as connecting rods and complete machining of differential housings.

-General Motors has selected GMTA to partner on the CVT 250 project for gear hones.

-Ford Motor has selected GMTA as a supplier for Scudding® sun gears on its new transmission lines.

-Scudding and now the Hard Scudding process, in which hardened gears can be cut and finished on the same machine, using the company’s unique adaptive software, are fast gaining acceptance in the market. Already the leader in high-precision internal gear processing, the result of our unique Scudding® technology, which leaves skiving and other methods far behind, GMTA has taken another giant step forward in gear production with the development of Hard Scudding. 

The Scudding process provides excellent results on green or soft gears, while this new Hard Scudding advancement enables the re-machining of hardened gears on the same machine, with a tooth-to-tooth composite error and total composite error in the AGMA 11, DIN 6 range and a surface finish better than 1.5 Ra. This all happens due to the adaptive software developed by GMTA.

-A new series of operational videos on Arnold lasers in action is now viewable on the GMTA website, www.gmtamerica.com.   The website is currently undergoing substantial upgrades, but remains visible to all.

-The new Mexican office of GMTA, located in Queretaro, is reporting brisk activity, owing to the substantial procurement authority in-country now. According to VP Scott Knoy, “This contrasts with bygone days, when the decision-making and purchasing were largely centered in America and specifically (here) in Detroit. It’s a whole new ballgame with the Mexican market today and we believe our new location (Queretaro) is well positioned to serve this dynamic manufacturing environment.”   GMTA already has a substantial installed base of machines in Mexico with all their partner companies.   At the new facility, machines are in place for demo and test run, plus the facility is fully staffed with application engineering, technical support, after-sale service and parts inventory.

-Sales continue to be brisk on the 9- and 10-speed transmission projects in the automotive market. Scott Knoy, GMTA VP, comments, “We’re seeing a lot of activity here in the States and especially in Mexico, so we know our timing was right with the opening of our new facility there.”

-GMTA attendance at Gear Expo in Detroit was highly productive, as we saw old friends and made many new ones! The demonstration of Hard Scudding was given and we met with all the top editors from the gear market media during the show. The Motor City is still the place to be for us gearheads!

-GMTA is now representing Rasoma machining centers, used primarily in the gear and spline markets, as well as FIMAT, an Italian builder of machining centers. These agreements cover full sales engagement for North America. Meanwhile, an agreement has been signed by GMTA to represent BvL parts washers exclusively in Mexico. The BvL line now means GMTA can be a single integrating source for machining, part cleaning and laser joining of power transmission products.

-Our Claudia Hambleton again braved the elements and brought a class of German language students from Saline, Michigan to Chicago for Christkindlmarket, as well as tours of the Museum of Science & Industry and the new Maggie Daley ice rink! A good time was had by all…and everyone made it back on the bus! She assures us all the gluwein consumed was strictly non-alcoholic!

-Our Christmas party was a good time to connect with our GMTA family and exchange presents. Some of the guys, who are themselves brilliant mechanical techs and machine tool engineers, tried to wrap their own presents and failed miserably, according to Claudia! “It takes a talent these guys clearly do not possess,” she mused.

Hard Scudding™ will change the face (pun intended) of gearmaking!

-GMTA will exhibit at several shows upcoming, including EMO in Milan and Gear Expo in Detroit.   At the latter, the company will show its latest development for gearmaking, namely, the Hard Scudding process. Just a few years ago, the concept of Scudding®, developed by GMTA and its partner company Wera in Germany, left the traditional skiving method in the dust, so to speak, for internal gear production used primarily in the powertrain buildup. This process, 5-10 times faster than gear shaping, formed the surface of the workpiece through several, small enveloping cuts, providing a surface finish and part quality level that was far superior to hobbing, shaping or broaching. Scudding is a continuous generating process, meaning no idle strokes on the machine tool, as when shaping gears.   Ring gears, sliding sleeves and annulus gearing, whether internal helical or spur, external helical or spur or blind spline, synchronizer parts with block tooth features and synchronizer hubs remain among the popular products in the market, made with Scudding technology.

Today, this continuous gear cutting process is widely used in production environments for internal, external, helical and spur gears, as well as splines and other components in the powertrain world. The machining can be done without the need for an undercut or groove (clearance) and lead of the gear can be manipulated via axial motions (crown/taper).   It is a demonstrably superior technology and automotive suppliers have embraced its advantages for many years now.

Impressive a technology as it is, the industry took another step forward recently with our new process known as Hard Scudding™. The conventional Scudding process provides excellent results on green or soft gears, while this new advancement enables the re-machining of hardened gears with a tooth-to-tooth composite error and total composite error in the AGMA 12, DIN 5 range and a surface finish better than 1.5 Ra.

The capital investment is minimal for shops and production departments already doing Scudding, because the same gear can be run on the same CNC machine, using a solid carbide tool to do the work. Recent testing done on various internal automotive powertrain and agricultural machinery ring gears is showing extremely positive results.   Stock division calculations on the tooth position are standard technology for GMTA and Profilator, so re-cutting is quick and easy. Using the latest CNC technology to control the machine kinematics, users are able to transfer this technology to Scudding machinery that is already deployed in the field. Thus, the same part can be cut on different machines at different times, allowing for more flexibility in scheduling. With today’s portable programming, onscreen or offline tool path and cutting condition simulation, plus the immediacy of call-up onscreen for all values and tolerances in real time, the busy machine shop or large production department stays flexible and demand responsive, using this Hard Scudding technology. In some cases, this new technology is applicable on near net, pre-hardened gear blanks, allowing significant step reductions in the manufacturing process.

In operation, cutting 60-100 thousandths per flank on a tooth, the Hard Scudding process can be used on a carburized or through-hardened parts; nitriding generally does not provide enough case depth to ensure sufficient stock for “clean-up”.   An automotive ring gear, for example, which requires 40-50 seconds for Scudding can be produced with Hard Scudding in 25-30 seconds.   This process development stands as a viable and very cost-effective alternative to conventional grind-and-hone operations, yielding a highly attractive cost per piece and extended tool life scenario.   The added benefits of reduced capital outlay and a significantly more consistent end product bode well for the automotive powertrain and other gear market segments.

-GMTA management will be attending EMO in Milan with its partners, then exhibiting at Gear Expo, being held this year in Detroit, October 20-22.

-GMTA is running at “light speed” with their new Arnold laser work cells. Available as single or double work cells, the Arnold systems are offered as CO2 or fiber lasers, with full integration into a machining line, either by means of robotic part articulation or other automated transfer mechanisms, most of which are being supplied to customers by GMTA engineering.   Leads from the last IMTS and the company’s aggressive ad program are already being developed into serious opportunities for the company, often in tandem with other machine tool lines and auxiliary equipment now offered by GMTA, according to company President Walter Friedrich.   The most recent development is laser cladding, a process of simultaneous metal deposition and fusion, with an extremely high degree of control on the geometry.   This technology has considerable application in the aerospace, medical, power gen and oil & gas market segments, in addition to the GMTA home base of automotive.

-The new Mexican office of GMTA, located in Queretaro, is reporting brisk activity, owing to the substantial procurement authority in-country now. ShannonLynch-GMTA continues their relationship with Eastern Michigan University (EMU), recently accepting Shannon Lynch, from the Masters in German and International Trade program, as an intern. Shannon’s mentor at GMTA and herself an MBA holder from EMU, the corporate treasurer Claudia Hambleton, remarked, “It’s the first time we’ve ever done anything like this. I feel really strongly about corporate responsibility for young people coming up into the industry…everybody needs experience, but how do you get it? I think this is a really good opportunity for Shannon.” The two shared several German classes at EMU, so the partnership was a natural fit. Shannon is responsible for assisting Claudia with daily office duties including receiving, invoices and translations, in communications with the company’s German partner firms. During her internship, Shannon has also had the opportunity to engage in industry-related educational and technical sessions such as the Economic Forum of the German American Chamber of Commerce, an Advanced Excel Workshop for data analysis and the recent North American International Auto Show Charity Preview, a very prestigious event and a great networking opportunity for the leaders in automotive manufacturing.

-GMTA participated in the annual Auto Show Charity Preview in Detroit and a good time was had by all.

-GMTA is running at “light speed” with their new Arnold laser work cells. Available as single or double work cells, the Arnold systems are offered as CO2 or fiber lasers, with full integration into a machining line, either by means of robotic part articulation or other automated transfer mechanisms, most of which are being supplied to customers by GMTA engineering. Leads from IMTS and the company’s aggressive ad program are already being developed into serious opportunities for the company, often in tandem with other machine tool lines and the Rosink parts washers now offered by GMTA.

-Recently, a Diskus vertical double-disc grinder was sold to Hoergiger Fine Stamping in Canada. The DDS 600 machine feature two vertically arranged motor spindles, each equipped with 600mm grinding wheels used for simultaneous two-sided grinding of shims. The machine has a rotary through-feed system and an integral post-process measuring system, all developed by Diskus engineering and provided to the customer by the GMTA teams from Ann Arbor.

-The Mexico office of GMTA is reporting brisk activity, owing to the substantial procurement authority in-country now. According to VP Scott Knoy, “This contrasts with bygone days, when the decision-making and purchasing were largely centered in America and specifically in Detroit. It’s a whole new ballgame with the Mexican market today and we believe our new location (Queretaro) there is well positioned to serve this dynamic manufacturing environment.” GMTA already has a substantial installed base of machines in Mexico from all their partner companies.

-GMTA management will be attending EMO in Milan with its partners, then exhibiting at Gear Expo, being held this year in Detroit, October 20-22.

-The alliance with Star, through which GMTA is sourcing tooling locally, continues to prosper and mutually benefit both companies.

-GMTA was featured prominently in a recent article in Manufacturing Engineering magazine, covering the subject of gear making for the energy sector.

-Now available from GMTA, the Präwema SynchroFine 205 HS gear honing machine features direct-driven, digitally controlled spindles for the tool and the workpiece, enabling precise, rigid synchronization. The Präwema Honing gear finishing process produces quality comparable to grinding results for spur and helical gears, as well as shafts. The machine’s software checks the stock allowance and workpiece runout and then optimizes the X-axis approach distance. Measuring the workpiece does not affect the cycle time and the process can reduce overall cycle times by 3 to 5 sec.

Honing Machine Optimizes Gear Finishing

Ann Arbor, Michigan – Now available from German Machine Tools of America (GMTA), the Präwema SynchroFine 205 HS gear honing machine features direct-driven, digitally controlled spindles for the tool and the workpiece, enabling precise, rigid synchronization. The Präwema Honing gear finishing process produces quality comparable to grinding results for spur and helical gears, as well as shafts. The machine’s software checks the stock allowance and workpiece runout and then optimizes the X-axis approach distance. Measuring the workpiece does not affect the cycle time and the process can reduce cycle times by 3 to 5 sec.
The machine features a pick-up design to enable automation. The workpieces and dressing tools are loaded and unloaded by the workpiece spindle. The large X-axis travel enables placement of additional stations adjacent to the loading/unloading station inside the machine, such as a two-flank roll-checking device. External robots and conveyor systems can also be integrated by GMTA engineering.

The honing machine is constructed on a natural granite bed to promote stability and control thermal fluctuations. The X and Z axes are equipped with linear motor drives. The cutting tool is clamped with a hydraulically operated system and the tool spindle can be swiveled into a vertical position, enabling easy access. Additional options are available for machining over-sized drive shafts as long as 850 mm and the Präwema SynchroFine 205 HS-D model, equipped with two spindles, is offered for further reduction of cycle times.
