No. 1042 is a 2000°F (1093°C), gas-fired heavy-duty furnace from Grieve, currently used for heat treating at the customer’s facility. Workspace dimensions of this furnace measure 30″ W x 60″ D x 30″ H. 750,000 BTU/HR are installed in four modulating natural gas burners with a floor mounted combustion air blower. Burners fire below hearth, with 9″ thick insulated walls comprising 5″ thick 2300°F ceramic fiber, 4″ 1900°F block insulation and 8 1/2″ floor insulation made from 4-1/2″ of 2300°F firebrick and 4” of 1900°F block insulation.
This Grieve furnace has two lanes of roller rails supported by firebrick piers and an air-operated platform with roller rails to bridge from loading table to workspace. Features include a 1/4” plate steel exterior reinforced with structural steel, 1/2″ steel faceplate at doorway and an air-operated vertical lift door.
Other features include safety equipment required by IRI, FM and National Fire Protection Association Standard 86 for gas-heated equipment plus a free-standing 390 CFM high-pressure combustion blower.
Controls on the No. 1042 include a digital indicating temperature controller and manual reset excess temperature controller with separate contactors.

Product demonstrations and technical presentations on 3D printing & CT scanning engage a large audience
On June 23, 2016, Exact Metrology held an open house at their Brookfield, Wisconsin location, showcasing its newest products in 3D printing and CT scanning equipment. The event was attended by a large number of people from several Midwestern states and a diverse range of business sectors, including manufacturing companies, civil engineering firms, municipalities, local artists and art museums.
Hosted by Dean Solberg, Exact Metrology co-president, the day included product demonstrations featuring the newest technology in 3D & CT scanners from Exact Metrology engineering specialists. Ten stations were set up throughout the facility, each demonstrating equipment from the top names in the industry and most of the equipment was available for hands-on use by the attendees. Products included the Romer measurement and scanning arm, Hexagon Q Flash, Leica tracker, Surphasers, ATOS II Blue Light Scanner, Artec Space Spider and Exact Metrology’s newest acquisition, the ProCon Compact CT scanner. Several attendees brought their own parts and had them scanned onsite, then 3D printed.
Running simultaneously throughout the day were several breakout sessions on: 3D systems (Geomagic Design X/Geomagic for Solidwork) presented by Mike Tsang; 3D Software Innovmetric (Polyworks) by Julien Thibodeau Gagne; and 3D printing by Mastergraphics demonstrated by Kevin Carr.
An especially impressive product demonstration included scanning a single grain of salt with the ProCon CT scanner. The scan picked up details as minute as the ridges in the salt grain, illustrating the scanner’s ability to capture the most precise details inside and out. CT scanning currently used by Exact technicians to examine injection molded parts, castings and forgings, evaluating porosity, grain structure, filament distribution etc. Data can be instantly compared to CAD files in the point cloud for assessment.
These high-definition CT imaging devices were, until recently, only available for use in the medical field. They now serve a wide range of product applications, including but not limited to, industrial, manufacturing & construction, power generation/nuclear, medical, aerospace and the arts, the latter already seeing applications in the detection of forgeries and sculpture structural integrity, as examples.
Exact Metrology offers a complete line of portable scanning and measurement technologies as well as contract measurement for 3D laser scanning services, reverse engineering services, non-contact inspection, metrology services and 3D digitizing. The company’s newest equipment includes a GE CT Scanner at its Cincinnati location, the first in America being used for industrial metrology rather than medical testing. No. 866 is a 550° (288°C) belt conveyor oven from Grieve, currently used for heat treating coiled spring steel at the customer’s facility. Workspace dimensions of this oven measure 18” W x 20’ D x 15” H. 60 KW are installed in Nichrome wire heating elements to heat the oven, while a 4200 CFM, 3 HP recirculating blower provides vertical downward airflow to the workload.
The oven travel comprises an 1-1/2’ long open belt loading zone, 20’ long insulated heat zone with recirculated airflow, 1’ long open zone, plus a 12’ long cooling zone and an 1-1/2’ long open unloading zone.
This Grieve belt conveyor oven features 4” insulated walls, aluminized steel exterior and stainless steel interior. Two 12” diameter tubeaxial fans, each driven by a ½ HP motor, push/pull air through cooling zone and a 12” wide, ½” x ½” high carbon steel flat wire conveyor belt with 1/3 HP motor drive, variable from 16 to 44 inches per minute, are also onboard the oven.
Controls on the No. 866 include a 10” diameter circular chart recording temperature controller and a manual reset excess temperature controller.

New extrusion head from market leader features Mechanically Assisted Gum Space (MAGS) adjustment

Guill Tool introduces the NEW 500 Series crosshead with MAGS gum space adjustment. The 500 Series is designed specifically for the flow characteristics and unique processing challenges of elastomeric compounds. One of the key features engineered by Guill on this new crosshead design is the mechanically assisted gum space (MAGS) adjustment system. This new method of gum space adjustment allows the operator to make an effortless adjustment from a single point using a common socket wrench. No more need to struggle with multiple nuts and bolts in order to adjust gum space, which leads to faster adjustments. The visual indicator on the core tube allows the operator to see how far the gum space has been moved, making those adjustments much more accurate and repeatable.
The hardware-free and patented cam lock design of the NEW 500 Series from Guill means no time is wasted unbolting and re-securing fasteners for disassembly and re-assembly. Only half of a rotation of the cam nut is required to loosen and automatically extract the deflector from the head body, which is another time saver. Also, with no undercuts on the deflector, there are no material hang-ups when extracting the deflector, allowing for faster and easier cleaning and changeover.
The NEW 500 Series also features the latest Center-Stage concentricity adjustment system that significantly reduces pressure on the tooling, allowing easier and more precise concentricity adjustments without loosening the face bolts. Easy-Out inserts for the adjusting bolts also allow simple replacement of locked or damaged adjusting bolts, which further saves on repair and downtime.
Another innovative feature of this new rubber/silicone crosshead is a cast aluminum liquid-fed cooling sleeve that allows the user to switch out the cooling jacket in the event of a line obstruction, again reducing downtime compared to traditional integrated cooling systems.
The NEW 500 Series crosshead with MAGS gum space adjustment is a drop-in replacement on most existing NRM lines, however this crosshead design can also be adapted to fit any extruder design or line layout.
The addition of a newly designed flow inlet channel reduces the shear and heat that is generated as the materials are being processed. This leads to lower head pressures allowing the material to move through the head in a much more balanced and even flow.
All crossheads supplied by Guill are furnished with a tool kit for assembly and disassembly as well as a detailed operator’s instruction manual. The engineering team at Guill will gladly assist users in the implementation and operation of the NEW 500 series crosshead.
