Guill Features New Rotary Die and Cam Lock Design at NPE

New rotary head offers a simplified design, while the cam lock will now be available on additional heads besides the Bullet

Guill Tool, the global leader in extrusion tooling, is set to unveil new, simplified designs for its cam lock feature and rotary die at NPE 2024: The Plastics Show. The show will take place May 6-10, 2024 in Orlando, Florida.

The cam lock is the same as supplied on the Bullet and will be supplied on additional heads, where applicable.  It allows quick and easy assembly and disassembly of the crosshead and eliminates the socket head caps screws.  By removing and replacing the internals, a different profile can be extruded in minutes rather than hours. Since the cam lock resets the internals in the right configuration every time, there’s far less chance of error, compared to the assembly and misalignment issues with socket set screws. The cam lock offers several features such as:  it takes only ½ turn to remove and install the deflector tip and no fastening hardware is required. Additional features include fast tool changes (threaded retaining ring for the die and threaded tip retainer), dies remove from the front and tips from the back, tooling retainers for gum space adjustment, vacuum connections, simplified cleaning and reduced downtime and operating costs.

Guill’s new rotary head is a simplified design compared to its previous models. By rotating the tooling in relation to the material flow, a rotary head increases the wall strength of an extrusion, thereby allowing a thinner wall with less material. Features include only rotating the die, randomizing any gauge bands or thickness variations and in some cases, improving material properties of the end product. Various sizes of tubing can easily be accommodated with the unique Guill cam-lock design that radically reduces set-up and changeover times. 

Extruders can realize a cost savings due to the elimination of secondary processes, cosmetic enhancement of the end product with the elimination of weld or parting lines, plus reduction or complete elimination of ovality. Typical applications for rotary heads include medical and multi-lumen tubing plus various high-end extrusions with interlocking layers or multiple striping requirements.

Guill Hires New Rep Organization & Promotes Rob Peters to General Manager

The company will offer sales support throughout Europe, while Padraic Lunn continues to represent Guill in the UK

Guill Tool, the global leader in extrusion tooling, recently announced EuroDev as their new European sales representative company. They will offer the full line of Guill products across Europe, excluding the UK.

Since its establishment in 1996, EuroDev has been the preferred business development partner of more than 500 North American firms. Their team consists of over 75 highly skilled multilingual professionals whose aim is to help North American companies map out expansion strategies in an increasingly complex marketplace. The company’s sales outsourcing includes market research, entry strategy, lead generation and sales.

Padraic Lunn has worked since 1990 in the medical device extrusion industry in Ireland. With more than 16 years in precision extrusion, Padraic Lunn Enterprises Ltd offers a full range of extrusion machinery and consultancy for all extrusion processes with a strong emphasis on tubing, wire, pipe and profile applications. The firm represents extrusion equipment companies in the UK, Ireland and other parts of Europe. Furthermore, Padraic provides customized extrusion training programs which are based on a customer’s specific process requirements.

In other news at Guill, Rob Peters has been promoted to General Manager. Rob is a graduate of Cornell University, obtaining his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and Master of Engineering in Aerospace Engineering. He has worked for a 8 years at Guill, starting off as an R&D Manager, transitioning to Business Intelligence/R&D Manager, then Director of Technology.  Rob is now responsible for various operations at Guill and reports directly to company ownership.

Guill Rheology Lab Now Available as a Commercial Service

Guill Tool, global leader in extrusion tooling, recently announced that its state-of-the-art rheology lab is offering its services for a fee to all those interested.  Measuring the flow characteristics of plastics and rubber helps predict how a customer’s material will flow through the company’s extrusion dies before production. In addition, tooling geometry is virtually optimized, and the project can be viewed in 3D CAD. Machines used include a rotational rheometer, scanning calorimeter, thermal conductivity meter and a new CT scanner.

The rotational rheometer quickly generates visco-elastic data for polymer melts, precisely capturing polymer melt properties.  The test temperature ranges between ambient and 300°C.  The lab’s scanning calorimeter characterizes the thermal properties of a polymer sample, such as: crystallization temperature, glass transition temperature and head capacity of the sample. Knowing these thermal properties permits the simulation of shear heating and hot and cold spots in the flow area.

Guill’s thermal conductivity meter is used to determine the thermal conductivity of the polymer sample across a range of temperatures.  Capable of high-definition measuring, the newly purchased IM-8000 Series Image Dimension Measurement System has triple the detection performance.  With a 20-megapixel CMOS sensor and a new algorithm for stable edge detection high-accuracy measurement is available on up to 300 features. Greater simulation accuracy reduces the number of physical reworks needed.

The in-house lab provides faster turnaround on test results, reducing delays during the design process and offering better control over the testing parameters. The result is a high-quality part delivered on time.

Guill Expands Its Team with Design Engineers

Guill Tool, global leader in extrusion tooling, recently announced the hire of two new employees. Nick Comeau and Brandon Ribeiro join Guill as Design Engineers. The announcement was made by Chuck Paull, Chief Marketing Officer, at the company’s West Warwick, Rhode Island headquarters.

Nick Comeau obtained his Mechanical Engineering degree from the University of Hartford, Connecticut, where he worked part-time as a senior machine shop manager. As a Design Engineer at Guill, he has several responsibilities including new product design concept generation and research and defining customer requirements using job quotations, purchase orders and customer interactions (emails, phone calls, conference calls). He also develops the design concept for customer requirements, works on the detailed design using SolidWorks (Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE) programs), database searches, along with proprietary design tools. Next, Comeau prepares the design to release it to operations for manufacture by ensuring accurate and complete drawings and Bill of Materials (BOMs), performs project reviews to define and implement process/product improvements and presents to customers at trade shows.

Brandon Ribeiro received his Mechanical Engineering degree from Roger Williams University, in Bristol, Rhode Island.  Before joining Guill, Ribeiro held several positions including metal fabricator, press brake operator, design engineer and automation engineer. His work at Guill involves creating extrusion die assemblies to the requirements specified by the customer. The details are acquired by the sales team along with reference assembly previously created. Once the assembly is completed, Ribeiro contacts the customer to get approval before sending the job to the shop floor for production.

Asked what he likes about working at Guill, Comeau said he’s enjoyed the hands-on-experience and that operating and cleaning assemblies shows the strengths and area for improvement of the current assemblies Guill uses.  Discussing what he’s looking forward to learning he said, “I’m looking forward to learning more about CFDs and how similarly we can replicate real world application within a simulation.”

Ribeiro appreciates seeing the friendly faces at Guill that are always ready to lend a helping hand. He’s enjoyed learning how to create complex geometry using the company’s 3D CAD software, SolidWorks.

Commenting on the new hires, Paull said, “We are excited to have Nick and Brandon join the Guill family. They are young professionals eager to learn all they can about the extrusion process to better serve our customers.”

Guill Buys New Grinder and Scanner

Guill Tool, the global leader in extrusion tooling, recently announced the purchase of a CNC grinder and a CT scanner.

The company’s rheology lab measures the flow characteristics of plastics and rubber to better predict how the customer’s material will flow through the extrusion dies before they’re made.  Together with the scanner, simulation greatly reduces the number of physical reworks needed.

Sold by DMG Mori, the TAYIYO KOKI, is a CNC vertical multi-process machine grinding ID, OD and face by one-time chucking. The ATC unit stores up to six tools. Features of the wheel spindle include HSK-E100 single spindle and a 2-position turret with indexing angle 0 and 22.5.”  An optional touch sensor for measuring ID, OD and face is available, as well as a scale feedback control for the X-axis. Control for the Z-axis is also available upon request. Additional features include a single point dresser (rotary dresser as an option) and a work spindle fixed-position stop.  Vertical Mate 85 is ideal for applications such as: planetary gears, spindle housings and bevel gears.

In the job shop, Guill offers CNC grinding technology with full automation in lights-out mode as well as custom service for dies and superior material quality, including stainless steel manufacturing and fabrication.

Capable of high-definition imaging, the IM-8000 Series Image Dimension Measurement System has triple the detection performance without sacrificing its simple operation.  With a 20-megapixel CMOS sensor and a new algorithm for stable, edge detection high-accuracy measurement on up to 300 features within seconds is available. Responding to Market Conditions in Pipe Extrusion

Guill is analyzing the latest market demands, combined with its extrusion die design expertise, to deliver solutions to its customers. Guill’s new Spiderless Pipe Die is an alternative solution, utilizing precision tooling to provide material savings vs conventional Basket Dies.

The global market for pipes used in irrigation systems, sewage systems and industrial applications is expected to grow in the coming years. According to a report by MarketsandMarkets™, the global market for pipes is projected to reach USD 23.5 billion by 2025, growing at a CAGR of 6.1% from 2020 to 2025.

The demand for pipes is driven by the increasing need for water and wastewater infrastructure, as well as the growth in industrialization and urbanization. These factors are expected to drive demand for pipes in emerging economies such as China, India and Brazil, as well as in developed markets such as the United States and Europe. The U.S. government has announced several infrastructure improvement plans aimed at revitalizing the country’s aging infrastructure, including its water and wastewater systems.

In March 2021, President Biden proposed the American Jobs Plan, a $2 trillion infrastructure plan that includes funding for a wide range of infrastructure projects, including the modernization of water infrastructure. The plan proposes to invest $111 billion in drinking water infrastructure, $45 billion in reducing lead exposure in drinking water and $56 billion in modernizing water infrastructure, including wastewater treatment plants and stormwater management systems.

Guill Introduces Spiderless Pipe Die for Extrusion

Guill Tool, the global leader in extrusion tooling, recently announced the availability of its Spiderless Pipe Die. This new offering utilizes precision tooling to provide increased material savings compared to conventional basket dies for pipe extrusions.

Guill Brings on Several New Hires in Key Positions

Guill Tool, global leader in extrusion tooling, recently announced the hire of three new employees. Peter Leary is the company’s new Technical Sales Engineer, while Lori Vaz and Diane Whittaker will provide customer service to clients. The announcement was made by Chuck Paull, Chief Marketing Officer, at the company’s West Warwick, Rhode Island headquarters.

Peter Leary is a mechanical engineer who brings over 10 years of application engineering experience from manufacturing, R&D and the medical/pharma industry. In his role as Technical Sales Engineer, Leary provides technical sales support and application advice for Guill Engineering products in the extrusion division. He is also available to make facility visits for consulting, troubleshooting or process improvement.

Diane Whittaker joined the company in December, 2022  as a Customer Service Representative. She supports Guill customers with order entry, order follow up and answering emails. She has worked in manufacturing for over 20 years and, before joining the company, she held several positions including customer service representative, production control lead and QC lead for a manufacturing company in Warwick, Rhode Island.

Lori Vaz  became a part of the Guill team in January, 2023 as a Customer Service Representative.  Her job duties are the same as Diane’s. She has extensive experience in jewelry manufacturing and 25 years of customer service experience.

Commenting on the new team members, Paull said, “They are a great addition to Guill Tool, bringing with them a wealth of experience that will undoubtedly benefit our customers across the industries we serve.”

Dimensions on this product are 2.750” outer diameter X 6.000” overall length, or (69.85mm outer diameter x 152.4mm overall length). This Guill internal spline tool was splined by the EDM department and completed milling on a Bridgeport milling machine.

Guill now offers its substantial machine shop capabilities as an independent service to customers in aerospace manufacturing. Products are made to customer specification.
