Exact Metrology Uses CT Scanning to Validate E-Lock Wiring Bobbin Postion

Exact Metrology, working at the company’s Brookfield, Wisconsin location, has successfully used its ProCon industrial CT scanning technology to validate the position of a wire configuration in the bobbin of an electronic lock assembly for one of its customers.

As techician Sean Plastine explains, “A customer came to us to verify the position of a 0.008” diameter wire inside its electronic lock assembly. The position of the wire could not previously be verified while the components of the lock were being assembled. Inspection of the wire bobbin after assembly was also impossible.”

By using its CT scanning technology on the completed lock assembly, Exact technicians were able to determine the wire’s precise position without the need for disassembly or other compromise on the finished article. Any deviation of the wire’s nominal position could be noted, allowing for subsequent changes in the assembly protocol, as needed.

The CT scan clearly shows the path that the wire pair follows inside the lock assembly.

550°F Cabinet Oven from Grieve

Grieve_1035No. 1035 is a 550°F (288°C), cabinet oven from Grieve, currently used for heating heavy steel housing at the customer’s facility. Workspace dimensions of this oven measure 38” W x 20” D x 26” H. 8 KW are installed in lncoloy sheathed tubular heating elements, while a 600 CFM, ½ HP recirculating blower provides universal front to rear airflow.

This Grieve cabinet oven has 6” insulated walls and an aluminized steel exterior. Features include a Type 304 stainless steel, 2B finish interior and one 38” wide x 20” long roller shelf at bottom of workspace rated for 200 lbs. loading.

Controls on the No. 1035 include a digital indicating temperature controller, a manual reset excess temperature controller with separate contactors, plus a recirculating blower airflow safety switch.

Exact Metrology Holds Tech Expo with 3Dvision Technologies on 3D Scanning & 3D Printing

Product demonstrations and technical presentations from principals impress large crowd at dual open house

On March 17, 2016, Exact Metrology held a tech event in Cincinnati, Ohio with partner company, 3DVision Technologies at both of their offices. Held on St. Patrick’s Day, the event was cleverly titled “Lunch, Learn & Luck,” and had a “March Madness” theme with basketball games playing on multiple widescreen televisions. The event was attended by over 100 people from local area industries, including automotive, aerospace and consumer goods.

Co-Hosted by Steve Young, Exact Metrology co-founder and President, and Todd Majeski, President of 3DVision Technologies, the day included presentations and product demonstrations of the newest products transforming the manufacturing industry in 3D printing and 3D scanning. The informative event provided insight and hands-on experience, while displaying the newest technology that is reshaping the traditional manufacturing process.

The day began at 3D Vision Technologies office, (a provider of engineering solutions & 3D printing for manufacturing companies), with a presentation by Todd Majeski. Majeski discussed the company’s long-term partnership with Exact Metrology, and how both companies work together to improve processes, increase quality, and get their customer’s products to market faster through 3D scanning and reverse engineering. After several presentations and a question-and-answer session, attendees were welcomed into a showcase of 3D printer demonstrations and product displays of printed samples from miniature to lifesize versions, including a skateboard, helmet, and an automotive front grill.

The second part of the tech event was held at Exact Metrology’s office, conveniently located just a short walk away. Participants walked together and, after a St. Patrick’s Day themed lunch, began the afternoon session with a presentation by Steve Young. Young discussed the newest technology in CT (Computed Tomography) scanning systems, which allows users to not only scan the outside of a part, but to actually see inside of it without taking it apart, or damaging the item. Until recently, this technology was used primarily in the medical field but is creating much excitement within a variety of industrial markets now, as it enables manufacturers to check for defects, internal contact points after assembly, porosity and dimensional accuracy, comparing actual scans to point cloud data, CAD files etc. According to Young, this type of 3D scanning has been a “huge success” for his company, which he co-founded with Dean Solberg, who runs the company’s facility in the Milwaukee area.

Products displayed at the event included the P40 Leica Scanner, a long-range scanner, which, according to presenter Jacob Wallace, Processing Engineer at Exact, can be set up and ready to scan in 30 seconds. The scanner has a 150-meter range and will show everything in the surrounding area. Wallace recently scanned an entire office to make an accurate 3D model, complete with windows, doors, ceiling and wall thickness. Other uses of these long-range scanners include collecting topography of roadways (without stopping traffic) and large buildings of 500,000 square ft. or more, to collect information inside and outside of the building, all within a reasonable timeframe.

Inside a Playstation control, possible with the GE vtomex CT ScannerJosh Schradin, QA Manager, demonstrated the GE Vtomex M CT Scanner with a full rendering of a videogame controller he had previously scanned. Attendees were able to see internal components, including the smallest features on the circuit board. He explained how the scan could also be used to find defects or to process for reverse engineering.

Other products displayed and discussed at the expo were the Romer Absolute 77, an Articulated Arm with a Laser Line Scanner, the Atos Triple Scan, the Artec EVA Handheld Portable Scanner and the NDI ScanTrak Large Volume Laser Scanner.

Exact Metrology ended the afternoon with a St. Patrick’s Day raffle, with two lucky attendees winning a 48” high-def television and a MakerBot 3D printer.

2000°F Inert Atmosphere Heavy-Duty Furnace from Grieve

 

Grieve 1039 Inert Atmosphere FurnaceNo. 1039 is a 2000°F (1093°C), inert atmosphere, heavy-duty furnace from Grieve, currently used for heat treating turbine components at the customer’s facility. Workspace dimensions of this furnace measure 36” W x 60” D x 36” H. 73 KW are installed in ICA wire coils supported by vacuum formed ceramic fiber installed on all interior surfaces, including door and beneath the hearth.

This Grieve inert atmosphere furnace has a roof-mounted, heat-resisting alloy circulating fan powered by a 1-HP motor with V-belt drive, water cooled bearings and inert atmosphere shaft seal.  Furnace features include 9” thick insulated walls comprised of 5” of 2300°F ceramic fiber and 4” of 1900°F block insulation; 8 ½” floor insulation comprised of 4 ½” of 2300°F firebrick and 4” of 1900°F block insulation. Other features include ¼” plate exterior reinforced with structural steel, ½” steel face plate at doorway with air-operated vertical lift door. Inert atmosphere construction includes continuously welded outer shell, high-temperature door gasket, sealed heater terminal boxes, inert atmosphere inlet, inert atmosphere outlet, inert atmosphere flow meter and manual gas valve.

Controls on No. 1039 include a digital programming temperature controller, a manual reset excess temperature controller with separate contactors, paperless event recorder and SCR power controller.

Automatic stripping of core-molded EPDM pipe seals

REP offers a simple and economical solution to a problem that is familiar to manufacturers of pipe seals.

The stripping process…often the stumbling block of the moulding process
When performed manually, the stripping process is often very difficult and productivity is considerably impacted; when being performed automatically, the challenge is to do it quickly without any heat loss and without production stoppages, due to overlapping seals. The solutions generally implemented in the industry today, such as molding with two sets of rotating core bars, require a very large press opening stroke to perform the core bar rotation outside the press and/or front and rear stripping units that lead to considerable space requirements and very high capital costs.

A simple and efficient solution
REP has recently worked on several projects and today offers its customers a competitive and profitable turnkey solution for reduced size on the automatic stripping of EPDM pipe seals of any size. You can watch the stripping process on http://www.youtube.com/REPinternational.

The solution can be matched to any seal size.   It is based on conveyor belts equipped with rotating belts, allowing for the individual stripping of the seals. The spacing between the bottom and top belts can be easily adjusted, thanks to a mechanical stopper system, thus making it possible to switch over from one seal type to another. The rotation speeds of the top and bottom belts can also be adjusted independently.

The belts are designed in compliance with a multi-layer technology, in order to ensure the reliability of the stripping process and the speed, while observing the quality of the stripped parts. In addition, the core bar in/out speeds on the kit (low/high speed, depending on the stroke limit) can be controlled. The kit is fully retractable for easy access to the cores on the rear side of the machine, allowing maintenance operations or more rapid production changes.

Project example for a pipe seal of a nominal diameter of 50 and 100mm

The equipment
The machine proposed is an injection molding machine REP V69Y50 with a clamping force of 400 tons, including a kit specially designed for automatic stripping, a vacuum system, hydraulic top and bottom ejectors and ancillary heating comprising heating elements inside the cores to hold the core temperature during the stripping process.

The tooling consists of a 112-cavity mould (2 cores) and a 2-nozzle cold runner block for the part of a nominal diameter of 110mm. For the part of a nominal diameter of 50mm, we use a 208-cavity mould (4 cores) and a 4-nozzle cold runner block.

The cycle
After the mould opens, the ejectors move out to lift the frame-supported cores. The cores move to the rear of the press (electrical movement) and simultaneously the rotation of the two belts allows for sequential stripping of the pipe seals.

The runners are automatically stripped and separated from the parts during the core bar translation. Metal guides are used to separate the runners as the core bars index on the kit.

The runners are recovered in a receptacle inside the cage, whereas the parts are recovered at the discharge end of the cage extension in a receptacle or using an automatic conveyor.

When the cores move inside press, a laser detection unit is activated to guarantee no seal adheres to the cores. If this is the case, an alarm signals for operator action at the end of the in-stroke of the cores.

The result
On this project, the customer’s profitability requirements have been met. The stripping time reached for both types of seals was approximately 40 seconds.

The entire system is competitively priced, with an excellent investment/payback ratio. This is a simple, rugged solution that is both reliable and easy to control during production.

Exact Metrology Does 3D Scans Of South Lion At Chicago Art Institute

Scans to be used by Met-L-Flo to make miniature 3D printed models for FABTECH

_24A9222On September 16, 2015, for approximately three hours, Exact Metrology technicians performed a 3D scan of the huge South Lion that guards the entrance to the world-famous Chicago Art Institute. The subsequent STL file is being used by Chicago-based Met-L-Flo to generate 300 3D printed miniature lions, to be displayed and provided to visitors at the upcoming FABTECH show in Chicago, November 9-12.

_24A9064Using their Surphaser and ARTEC scanners, Exact technicians built a 3D image, which was displayed on a huge monitor for passersby to see. As part of this event, which was sponsored by FABTECH show management, FMA president and CEO Ed Youdell introduced Exact president Dean Solberg and Met-L-Flo president Carl Dekker, who both detailed the work their companies were doing to complete this unique and interesting project.

The South Lion, named Attitude of Defiance, was _24A9213originally sculpted by Edward Kemeys for the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago and stood on the steps of the Fine Arts Palace, which is today the Chicago Museum of Science & Industry.   Later that year, the lion and his “brother”, named On The Prowl, were recast in bronze and moved to the steps of the new Art Institute, where they’ve guarded the entrance to this day.

As Dean Solberg remarked, “We’re creating a file with millions of 3D data points that would allow the program to accurately recreate the lion at almost any size, whether on a conventional CNC machine tool or in the new 3D printing method being used by Carl (Dekker) and his team at Met-L-Flo. Dekker noted that 3D printing of one of the seven additive manufacturing techniques his company currently employs to make not only prototypes but also functional short run production parts.

_24A9309Local media and trade press were on hand at the event, which garnered TV coverage that evening in Chicago.
