The Cincinnati Reds celebrated their 150th anniversary as the nation’s first all-professional baseball team by dedicating a pavilion outside the ballpark on May 5, 2019.
Local Cincinnati artist, Tom Tsuchiya, created relief figures of the members of the 1869 team that adorn a gazebo highlighting the site. It includes 12 bronze busts of 10 players, the club president and secretary. Tom also designed the player statues around the Great American Ball Park. The figures enshrined include Asa Brainard, pitcher/outfield; Doug Allison, catcher; Charlie Gould, first base; Charlie Sweasy, second base; Fred Waterman, third base; George Wright, shortstop; Andy Leonard, left field; Harry Wright, center field/pitcher (team captain); Cal McVey, right field; William “Dick” Hurley, substitute; Aaron Champion, club president and John Joyce, secretary.
Exact Metrology, distributor of the GOM CT Scanner, used the GOM ATOS Triple Scan for each sculpture. The GOM ATOS Triple Scan is a high resolution, optical digitizer that delivers rapid and precise 3D measuring data for the optimization of design processes. Precise fringe patterns are projected onto the surface of the object and are recorded by two cameras, based on the stereo camera principle. As the beam paths of both the camera and the projector are calibrated in advance, 3D surface points from three different ray intersections can be calculated. The projection unit of the ATOS Triple Scan is based on Blue Light Technology. Since the sensor works with narrow-band blue light, interfering ambient light can be filtered during image acquisition. Short measuring times are possible because of the powerful light source.
Then, the data was processed in Exact’s Geomagic, the company’s 3D software for digital models of physical objects. Next, the data from the software was used to create a Styrofoam negative with a CNC machine. Lastly, the negative was taken to a foundry to be poured in the final sculpture.
The pavilion is located in the former rose garden, next to the Hall of Fame and Museum, along Joe Nuxhall Way on the first base/right field side of the Great American Ballpark. This pavilion is the first permanent recognition of the original Red Stockings.

Exact Metrology hosted its annual Open House at their Brookfield, Wisconsin location on Thursday, June 6, 2019, from 9 am to 3 pm central standard time. The company is located at 20515 Industry Avenue. Many old clients, as well as new ones, were on hand to learn about the company’s new technologies.
Clients attended several breakout sessions, discussing Polyworks software, Geomagic software and GOM CT scanning.
Jonathan Bourchard, the director of sales and business development at Polyrix, was on hand to talk about both about the company’s scanners and software. According to Bourchard, Polyrix is a 3D scanning system with unique technology based on structured light. The scanner takes images from all angles, so users obtain a 3D image without operator interference. Next, the scan can be compared to a CAD model with Polyworks. Reverse engineering also occurs through Polyworks. Bourchard mentioned that most materials can be scanned except translucent materials and shiny concave surfaces.
One of the companies present at the Open House was Willer Tool Corporation. Steve Keniz, Willer’s quality technician, attended this event to gain more knowledge on Exact Metrology’s new technologies. Keniz mentioned that the company already uses the Romer Absolute Arm and the Surphaser scanner but that they are interested in purchasing more equipment in the future. Regarding this event, Keniz believes the Brookfield Open House provides a great opportunity for networking and getting helpful insights.
3D Parts Unlimited, a printing service bureau, is another Exact Metrology customer. Besides replicating parts, the company also reverse engineers them. Scott Boese, the company’s sales engineer, mentioned that complex parts are sent to Exact Metrology. The parts are scanned and an STEO file is sent. Next, 3D Parts Unlimited prints it and sends it to their customers. Boese expressed interested in GOM and wanted to purchase a Romer Absolute Arm.
Dean Solberg, Exact Metrology’s co-president, said the Open House was meant to introduce clients to new technology in the 3D scanning world. The GOM CT scanner is a high accuracy and high resolution scanner new to the US market. Polyrix’s multiple light systems are activated with a single button and can scan both large and small parts quickly. Solberg was pleased with the companies in attendance, some of which were Mercury Marine, Sub Zero, Komatsu and NH Global. In terms of responses he’s gotten, Solberg mentioned that attendees are always learning something new and that this makes it easier for them to do their job.
The Brookfield office is still expanding. In fact, due to a continuous addition of equipment and capabilities, the space will soon be outgrown. As a result of its expansion, Exact Metrology has added a full-time training professional for Polyworks and Geomagic Design X and several contract inspection specialists.
Looking towards the future, Solberg believes Exact Metrology has several opportunities for entry into new markets. One of these is their role as the only North American distributor of GOM CT scanners. They are also excited about expanding in the Texas market.
Solberg concluded “We are thrilled about the results of the Open House, the attendees and what the attendees learned. We look forward to holding this annual event again and introduce our customers to more and better technology.”

Exact Metrology was present at two career events, one at Northern Kentucky University and the other at Cincinnati State University.
On Wednesday, February 27, Northern Kentucky University held its 2019 Career Expo from 2 to 5 pm. There were 140 employers meeting with students and alumni for internships, co-ops and full-time positions. Employers present came from fields such as: accounting/finance, athletic training and exercise science, math/science/EGT, business, computer science, etc.
Cincinnati State University also held its Career/Co-Op job fair on Thursday, February 28, from 1 to 3 pm. Approximately 40 companies and organizations participated.
Both events were attended by Matt Martin, the company’s branch manager and an application engineer at Exact Metrology. At these two events, Exact Metrology featured the Artec Eva 3D handheld scanner, from Artec 3D, a world-renowned developer and manufacturer of professional 3D scanners and software. On March 28, 2019, Exact Metrology was among several companies who came to Latonia Elementary Career Day. This event was meant to introduce students to a variety of careers in health, law, manufacturing, engineering, technology and other fields. Fifth grade students spent three weeks researching different careers that interested them. They learned information concerning future salary, education and job skills. Then, students had the opportunity to speak with professionals in their chosen fields and ask questions.
Chris Lafferty, a specialist in Artec 3D’s, professional-grade handheld 3D scanners and software, attended on behalf of Exact Metrology. Together with Jason Kleinhenz, marketing manager at Exact Metrology, they met with students to teach them about metrology using the Artec Leo and Geomagic Design X. Artec Leo is the first 3D scanner to offer onboard automatic processing with an integrated touch panel viewer. This frees users from being tied to a computer for data capture. Users can scan the object and see the 3D replica being built in real time on the screen. The 3D model can be rotated to check that all areas have been captured. The final 3D model can be directly exported to Geomagic Design X.
Geomagic Design X is the industry’s most comprehensive reverse engineering software-combining history-based CAD with 3D scan data processing and enables users to create feature-based, editable solid models compatible with existing CAD software. Geomagic Design X provides an easy way to integrate CAD models from a 3D scanner into an existing engineering design workflow. Effective immediately, Exact Metrology is proud to announce that they’ve become a distributor of the GOM CT scanner in the U.S. The announcement was made by company co-presidents Steve Young and Dean Solberg. The computed tomography scanner GOM CT provides 3D data of internal and external component geometries in exceptionally high resolution. The GOM CT produces the finest details visible throughout the component, simplifying initial sampling, tool correction and inspection tasks during production. It captures complex components including the “inner workings” in a single scanning process, so that the user receives a complete image of the test specimen for form and position analysis or nominal/actual comparisons. The system shows its greatest strengths when digitizing smaller plastic and light metal parts.
High-contrast X-ray detector and 5-axis kinematics
To achieve a very high level of detail during component digitization, the components of the GOM CT were perfectly matched to each other: A high-contrast 3k X-ray detector generates a very fine pixel grid (3008 x 2512 pixels) and thus lays the foundation for high-precision detection of the measured components. 5-axis kinematics with integrated centering table makes it easier for the user to position the component optimally in the measuring volume, so that the measurement is always performed with the best possible resolution. An additional plus: Within the measuring volume (diameter: 240 mm, height: 400 mm) several objects can be measured simultaneously in one scan, further reducing processing times. Thanks to the proven GOM technology the GOM CT ensures high precision and repeatable measurement results.
Data acquisition and evaluation in one software package
As with all GOM metrology systems, the control of the device, data acquisition and evaluation are combined in a single software package. This means that no further software is required; the chain from recording the raw data to creating the measurement report is greatly simplified.
Exact Metrology will house a GOM CT scanner at their Brookfield, Wisconsin location. Once there, it will be used for customer demonstrations and educational purposes, as well as contract scanning.

Effective immediately, Exact Metrology is proud to announce the availability of its Artec LEO 3D scanner, the first scanner to offer onboard automatic processing with an integrated touch panel viewer. This frees users from being tied to a computer for data capture.
The scanner has a 3D reconstruction rate of 80 frames per second, making it the fastest professional scanner on the market. With its large field of view, Artec LEO can scan and process large objects and scenes quickly and accurately.
It features data acquisition up to 4 million points/second, with a working range of .35-1.2 m. The 3D resolution on this scanner is up to .5 mm and 3D point accuracy up to .1mm. State-of-the-art technologies including the NVIDIA® JetsonTM platform, which is the scanner’s internal computer, featuring Quad-core ARM® Cortex® -A57 MPCore CPU and NVIDIA MaxwellTM 1 TFLOPS GPU with 256 NVIDIA® CUDA® Cores; a built-in 9 DoF inertial system- accelerometer, gyro and compass. LEO has the ability to scan in sunlight, as well as capture dark and shiny objects. As will all Artec scanners, LEO uses advanced hybrid technology and texture tracking. Therefore, you can point at your object and shoot. There is no need to stick targets and remove them. The texture resolution is 2.3 mp.
This handheld scanner is equipped with a 4” LCD screen to capture images of the data. The 3D light source is provided by state-of-the-art VCSEL (Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser) technology. With no need to connect to a computer or to plug in to a main power source, users can hold the scanner and walk around freely, scanning without worrying about wires or additional equipment. Artec LEO’s battery pack allows users to scan for 3.5 to 4 hours. Supplementary battery modules permit unlimited 3D scanning on expeditions or in remote areas. There are 2 cameras on this scanner. One is a range camera for 3D geometry and another is a color camera. The color camera captures color texture data. Besides built-in battery and wireless connectivity, Artec LEO can stream to a second device and upload the data.

Exact Metrology was hired by the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to scan their “Classic Bobble Boy” bobblehead. The bobblehead was scanned with the Hexagon Romer absolute arm. The portable measuring arm allows users to measure on the machine or the shop floor. The Hexagon Romer features no honing procedures, simplicity of operation and reliable 3D measurements. Articulated arms can be equipped with probes of different lengths and scan heads that measure even difficult-to-reach points either optically or by touch.
The entire process of scanning and data processing was done in a couple of hours. The captured data was used to create a six foot statue replica. At present, the statue is being painted and will be displayed in front of the museum.

Exact Metrology worked with the Reading Historical Society museum in Cincinnati, Ohio to scan a replica of a World War I statue.
The original statue was created in 1919 and it sits atop a monument for those who bravely served during World War I. This monument was the first World War I monument in Reading and one of the first in the U.S. A few years ago, a replica was created and placed in the Reading Historical Society museum in Cincinnati, Ohio. Wanting to keep this piece of history alive, the Reading Historical Society contacted Exact Metrology to scan the statue.
Exact used their Artec 3D scanner for the task. The Artec 3D scanner is a portable 3D camera that captures video, each single frame of which is a 3D image. Walking around the object captures it with camera from various angles and the accompanying software combines the scanned frames in a single mesh. All Artec scanners have measuring speed up to 1.5 million points per second, while also providing high resolution (up to 0.2 mm) and high accuracy (up to 0.02 mm).
Scanning of the statue took two hours and two days to process the data. The data was then transferred to the University of Cincinnati, where a number of statues were 3D printed in small form. These statues will be sold at a fundraiser.

Exact Metrology will exhibit at next year’s SHOT show, held in Las Vegas, Nevada. This annual trade show is geared towards the shooting, hunting and firearms industries. SHOT is the biggest show of its kind. Besides serving the shooting and hunting industry, it also serves commercial buyers and sellers of military, law enforcement and tactical products.
Given the industries mentioned, Exact Metrology is looking to speak to companies that manufacture firearms, hunting and outdoor trade equipment. The job titles that are most relevant to the company are manufacturing engineers, research and development and quality personnel.
Exact Metrology can provide scanning equipment for all of the markets that pertain to SHOT. However, the most common piece of equipment used is CT or computed tomography scanning in the firearms sector. This process captures 3D images at specific intervals by rotating the object 360 degrees. Thus, 3D views of the inside of a gun, for example, can be obtained without cutting or destroying it.
The firearms market includes suppliers that make scopes, silencers and other gun accessories. Exact Metrology can provide these suppliers with 3D CAD models that allow users to compare the model to the actual part and detect problems. This in turn, permits high quality and accurate reverse engineering of guns.
