Exact Metrology Helps Vintage Car Owner

Exact Metrology, a comprehensive 3D metrology service provider and hardware sales company, recently scanned a unique car model. Exact personnel from the Brookfield, Wisconsin office used reverse engineering to help its owner design the car’s windshield.

Scanning of Speedster Coupe
Scanning of Speedster Coupe

Robert Smith is the owner of a one-off design car — a 1933 Speedster Coupe.  The car needed a special sized windshield which is no longer produced by any glass manufacturers. Smith contacted Curved Glass Creations, in Pompano Beach, Florida, to find out if they could supply him with the windshield. While the company wasn’t able to help, they did reach out to Exact Metrology with this special request.

Joe van der Sanden from Exact Metrology completed the scan at the client’s location using a Hexagon Absolute Arm 8525 with an RS6 scanner. The Hexagon Absolute Arm 7-axis delivers tactile probing and laser scanning in a uniquely ergonomic package. It is ideal for high-end portable measurement applications. The articulating arm offers ease of movement and ease of measurement.  The Hexagon RS6 laser scanner is designed for high-speed and accuracy scanning.  It scans up to 1.2 million points/sec with a scan rate of 300 Hz. The RS6 also has a wider laser stripe of 150 mm at mid-range and a visual guide that provides real time feedback for stand-off distance.  Built using SHINE technology (Systematic High-Intelligence Noise Elimination), it allows users to easily scan 99% of parts without touching the scanner exposure. With the Hexagon Absolute Arm 7-axis, the scanner can be removed if necessary and replaced without need for calibration.  Furthermore, with the arm mounted scanner, it is easier to measure due to less preparation, less set up, less settings and scans with full frame, with full line width, all the time.

Exact Metrology scan data

Once the scan was completed, the file format was agreed to and delivered to Curved Glass Creations.  They were able to make the custom windshield. Robert Smith commented that he had a unique experience reaching out to the 3D image industry to ensure the accuracy of the glass created for his Alloway Speedstar. He was pleased that the scan was completed on-site and that Exact Metrology explained the process well to both him and the glass manufacturer. Smith concluded,” I never suspected my car built at “Speedy’s Rod and Kustom’s” would require such high technology! I can’t thank Exact Metrology enough for their involvement and making it look easy.”

Scanned Honda engine with Artec Leo

AI-Powered, HD Mode for 3D Scanners

Exact Metrology, a comprehensive 3D metrology service provider and hardware sales company, has increased the capability of their Artec 3D handheld scanners with the new HD mode. This Artificial Intelligence-powered scanning technology provides ultra-sharp, clean and detail-rich scans for Artec Leo and Artec Eva.

Powered by Artec 3D‘s AI neural engine, users can obtain sharp 3D scans with a resolution of up to 0.2 mm. Trained on hundreds of thousands of carefully selected samples, the engine’s neural network detects familiar patterns, surface details and shapes.   This allows the 3D scanner to reconstruct a higher number of polygons per frame, resulting in 3D data that’s both denser and higher quality. Now, the desired HD density can be selected from a standard 1X density up to 36X for Eva  (~3 mln polygons per frame) and 64X for Leo (~5 mln polygons per frame).  HD mode makes it possible to capture smaller, thinner elements with the 3D scanner while also considerably reducing noise. With these Artec scanners, fine edges can be captured in high definition, faithful to their original shape. It’s easy to capture hard-to-reach areas as the scans are reconstructed with every detail, giving users complete surface geometry.

Handheld Eva and Leo scanners can easily scan dark or shiny surfaces in high resolution and capture the full range of their geometries, without additional steps. Using the Artec AI engine, little to no noise in the raw scan data results in cleaner processed data and also saves time when producing the final 3D model. Once difficult to capture, now short hair, even separate strands, are fully within reach when scanning with HD mode.  Furthermore, these scanners can capture a broad range of objects flawlessly and in high detail: from smaller, intricate parts such as thin pipes or valve handles, to larger objects with multiple high-detail sections, including car engines and skeletons. A perfect fit for reverse engineering and quality control due to clean, comprehensive data, scans can be easily fitted with primitive shapes and exported to the most popular CAD solutions for development.

Exact Metrology Performs Bulk Plastic Cap Inspection

Exact Metrology, a comprehensive 3D metrology service provider and hardware sales company, performed a recent inspection on molded caps to showcase the power and capability of multi-part inspections at its Brookfield, Wisconsin office.

scan during multi-part inspections

Computed tomography (CT) scanning is an x-ray methodology yielding 3D results by placing an object on a rotational stage between an x-ray tube and an x-ray detector, rotating the object 360 degrees and capturing images at specific intervals. Furthermore, CT scanners can easily scan multiple parts at the same time.  To render the 3D x-ray model of the object or part, the series of images is reconstructed. CT visualization software can slice in any direction to produce optimal views and images required for the analysis of internal configuration and instant CAD comparison. This software can segment multiple scanned parts, creating individual files for each component. These can be analyzed independently, and all statistics can be evaluated.

The GOM CT scanner used by Exact enables the inspection of complex parts based on volume. It produces the finest details visible throughout the component, simplifying initial sampling, tool correction and inspection tasks during production. It captures complex components including the “inner workings” in a single scanning process, so that the user receives a complete image of the test specimen for form and position analysis or nominal/actual comparisons.

This scanner features a 225 kV X-ray source and a high-contrast 3k X-ray detector that generates a very fine pixel grid (3008 x 2512 pixels), laying the foundation for high-precision detection of the measured components. 5-axis kinematics with an integrated centering table make it easier for the user to position the component optimally in the measuring volume, so that the measurement is always performed with the best possible resolution. Additional features include temperature balancing for metrology applications, an I/O port and photogrammetric calibration. Within the measuring volume (diameter: 240 mm, height: 400 mm) several objects can be measured simultaneously in one scan, further reducing processing times. Thanks to the proven GOM technology, the CT ensures high precision and repeatable measurement results. As with all GOM metrology systems, the control of the device, data acquisition and evaluation are combined in a single software package. This means no additional software is required; the chain from recording the raw data to creating the measurement report is greatly simplified.

Using both the scanner and the software, 30 individual inspection reports were generated on these injection molded caps. Statistical results compared all measurements. Sean Plastine, an Exact Metrology Application Engineer and Greg Groth, Division Manager, were involved in this process. They believe it is significant for the company because it reduces the amount of time needed to get results for customers, thus eliminating the need for measuring 30 parts individually with conventional methods such as CMM, laser or structured light.

Exact Metrology Scanned “Liberty of Poetry”

Liberty of Poetry scanned by Artec Eva - 3d scan
Liberty of Poetry scanned by Artec Eva

From October 11, 2019 to April 26, 2020, the Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration in New York exhibited “Sisters in Liberty: From Florence, Italy to New York, New York.” The exhibit was a collaboration between Kent State University in Kent, Ohio and the Opera di Santa Croce, a nonprofit organization in charge of the Franciscan Cathedral Santa Croce. Through art and multimedia presentations, the exhibit looked to start an international conversation about the meaning of liberty and how the concept had evolved.

The exhibit featured an 80% to scale replica of Pio Fedi’s “Liberty of Poetry,” housed at the church. It is said to have served as the basis for the Statue of Liberty. “Liberty of Poetry” honors Giovanni Battista Niccolini, a poet who inspired and supported the Resorgimento the Italian struggle for self-determination.

With permission from the Vatican, Kent neuroscientist Robert Clements and Josh Talbott, both of whom have a background in 3D imaging, traveled to Florence to scan the statue over a three-day period using technology provided by Exact Metrology.

Different angle scan with Artec Eva - 3d scan
Different angle scan with Artec Eva.

Kent State University rented the Artec Eva scanner and Artec Studio software. Chris Lafferty at Exact Metrology provided the university with equipment, training and support. The Artec Eva, provided by Artec 3D, is used for making a quick, textured and accurate 3D model of medium sized objects. It scans quickly, capturing precise measurements in high resolution. Not only does it capture almost any type of object (including black and shiny surfaces), but it is used in numerous industries including quality control, heritage preservation, forensics, automotive, medical, aerospace and prosthetics. Artec Studio makes it easy to obtain accurate 3D models. It features an advanced smart mode that guides users through post-processing, automatically selecting the most effective settings for the data and producing a high precision 3D model. It offers best in class texture and geometry tracking, thus eliminating the need for targets on objects. Whether using Autopilot or manual mode, the software never compromises on precision. Furthermore, powerful algorithms process data in seconds and Artec Studio features a full range of advanced settings. Users can scan and process data on a tablet.

After scanning the statue, Clements and Talbott returned to Kent State to process 30 to 40 gigabytes of data and create a blueprint for a 3D printer.

Freshmade3D, a Youngstown-based start-up company, printed the replica in three sections, so the statues could be transported easily to New York. The statue was painted by a team of students at Kent State and combines sand and resin to replicate the original.

Commenting on this project, Chris Lafferty said, “This was a great experience for us as we got to see the finished product and how Exact Metrology contributed to this. We look forward to more collaborations like this in the future.”

Exact Metrology Reverse Engineering Final Product

Exact Metrology Showcases Potential of Reverse Engineering

Exact Metrology Reverse Engineering CT ScanGreenery 33 is a company in Cincinnati, Ohio that produces creative and unique plant holders and pots.  The company donates 33% of their earnings to environmental protection agencies. One of Exact’s engineers is friendly with Greenery 33’s owner, so Exact Metrology participated in a marketing campaign aimed to show the process of reverse engineering and how it can used with various materials.

Exact Metrology Reverse Engineering Plant HoldersThe first step was to scan and have a digital copy of a physical skull.  Secondly, the skull was reverse engineered using Geomagic DesignX software and NURBS. Geomagic is a leading provider of 3D software to create digital models of physical objects for industries such as: archaeology, aerospace, medical and dental, tooling, foundry and sculpture and arts. The Geomagic Design X combines history-based CAD with 3D scan data processing, enabling users to create feature-based, edible solid models compatible with existing CAD software. NURBS, or Non-Uniform Rational B-spline is used to represent curves and surfaces. Next, surface analysis is performed with Geomagic Design X for parametric modeling. Afterwards, NURBS is inspected with a color map against the scanned data of Geomagic. Lastly, .stl files rendered in Keyshot 3D of the skull are placed in product shots for Greenery 33.

Exact Metrology Reverse Engineering Final ProductThis process took two days. By using reverse engineering, Exact Metrology showed Greenery 33 an efficient and cost-saving way of working with materials like plastic, glass and ceramic without physically reconstructing it.

Exact Metrology Helps Retrofit Aircraft

Exact Metrology, a comprehensive metrology services provider, recently completed a job at Chicago Jet Group. Located in Sugar Grove, Illinois, the company started in 2003 with the idea of providing the highest level of professionalism and attention to detail in the corporate aviation industry.  Chicago Jet Group specializes in aircraft acquisition, aircraft management, charter services, pre-purchase evaluation, aircraft avionics, aircraft consulting and aircraft maintenance. The company was retrofitting older Dassault Falcons avionics and needed a CAD model of the panel to see how it would fit.

Joe van der Sanden, application engineer from Exact Metrology, scanned the panel with an 85 series Hexagon Romer Absolute Arm. The Absolute Arm 7-axis delivers tactile probing and laser scanning in an ergonomic package. It is the best choice for ease of movement and ease of measurement. The flagship RS5 laser scanner offers high-speed 3D scanning Retrofit Aircraftfor surfaces and features on a wide range of finishes and materials with less investment than the RS6. Furthermore, the RS5 laser scanner boasts a wide and horizontally-oriented laser scan line and fully-automatic exposure settings, making general purpose scanning functionality simple to apply regardless of application. In addition, with mid-range width at 115 millimeters, the laser scanner line of the RS5 makes digitizing large surfaces simple and quick.  The RS5 can be easily removed from the arm, allowing simpler and safer access to touch probing functionality in hard-to-reach areas. Thanks to repeatable mounting, it can be remounted without recalibration. Through the on-wrist OLED display screen of the Absolute Arm 7-axis, the RS5 allows for measurement feedback and settings adjustment at the point of measurement for a clear improvement to workflow productivity.

Then, dimensions were obtained in Polyworks Inspector. The Polyworks software suite covers the complete product development cycle, from part and tool design and prototyping down to final inspection of assembled parts. Polyworks Inspector™ is the industry-standard toolbox for product engineering, assembly guidance and final inspection.

Reverse engineering was performed using Geomagic Design X. This software combines history-based CAD with 3D scan data processing and enables the creation of feature-based, editable solid models compatible with existing CAD software.  Geomagic Design X allows users to re-use existing designs without having to manually update old drawings or re-measure and rebuild a model in CAD. This software is easy to learn and use, for it uses familiar history-based tools found in all major CAD products.

Chicago Jet Group was very pleased with the work performed by Exact Metrology and they would be happy to work with them again.  A senior avionics technician at the company said, “This will save us months of measuring and drafting.”
