Platinum Tooling President Celebrates Four Generations and 100 Years in Metal Cutting

Preben’s grandfather, Louis Eckart Hansen

In a world where machine shops are struggling to stay open and maintain their business and in a day when “going into dad’s business” is not what it once was, Platinum Tooling is an exception to the rule. Located in Prospect Heights, Illinois, the company is set to reach an important milestone. In 2022, company President Preben Hansen and his family will celebrate 100 years working in metal cutting and four generations of Hansen men in the industry.  How cool is that?

The story began with Preben’s grandfather, Louis Eckart Hansen, who learned his trade in Copenhagen, Denmark in the early 1900s. Louis worked as a machinist in the Danish Navy’s repair facility.  Preben’s father, Svend Eckart Hansen, honed his skills under the guidance of Louis. In 1958, Svend emigrated with his family, including young Preben, to the U.S. Despite not knowing English, he found employment within days of arriving in Chicago, because of his skill as a tool maker. Svend began his career as a machinist and ended it in the 1990s as a master tool maker at Ramcel Precision Stamping and Manufacturing LLC in Northbrook, Illinois.

With manufacturing and tooling in his DNA, Preben worked in the machine shop of the former Fulton Machine Company in downtown Chicago, while attending the University of Illinois/ Chicago and pursuing a degree in engineering.  Following college, he worked in the shop at Oakley Industries building custom machinery. After several years in the shop, Preben moved to the front office and into an inside sales position. Later, at Jemco Tool & Die, he learned programming and set-up on their CNC lathes and machining centers which was his introduction to machine tools and their accessories. His next job was at HPI, now known as Pioneer Heartech Precision Inc., a distributor of tool holders and related products, in Elk Grove Village, Illinois. Preben started as an Outside Sales representative of tool holders and rotary tables, then became the company’s Sales Manager. This was followed by work at Lyndex-Nikken, another machine tool accessory supplier in Mundelein, Illinois. Here, Preben was introduced to live tools and once again worked as Sales Manager. In 2010, Preben started a joint venture with heimatec GmbH, becoming the President of Heimatec, Inc., a company specializing in live tools, angle heads and multi-spindle drill heads. In 2018, Heimatec, Inc. was purchased by Platinum Tooling Technologies, Inc. with headquarters located in Prospect Heights, Illinois. Preben Hansen is the  COO and President at Platinum Tooling.

Preben with his dad, Svend Eckart Hansen

In total, Preben has over 30 years of experience in the machine tool accessory market and over 40 years in the manufacturing industry. Given his credentials, it’s no surprise that Preben has established himself as a leading authority on these topics in the North American machine tool accessory market.  He often hosts knowledge bars at trade shows to SRO crowds.

In keeping with this family tradition, Preben’s son, Luke Hansen, joined his dad’s company in 2018 as a Technical Sales Specialist for several of the product lines sold by Platinum Tooling, including Tecnicrafts collets and guide bushings for Swiss machines. After graduating from high school, Luke joined the army in search of his calling and received great training there. Upon his discharge, he decided to put into practice the motivational and goal orientation skills he had learned in the military.  In his current position at Platinum Tooling, Luke continues to expand his knowledge of the machine tool accessory market as well as build valuable relationships with the North American sales and distribution network of the company.

Preben Eckart Hansen and his son Luke James Hansen

Reflecting on 100 years as a family in the manufacturing industry, Preben Hansen says, “The machine tool industry has been and continues to be an extremely vital part of our country’s continued success. My son Luke and I are proud to be 3rd and 4th generation professionals involved in this exciting industry.”

Platinum Tooling President Presents Product Lines in New Video

Platinum Tooling Technologies, Inc., the exclusive North American importer of Heimatec Live Tools and Angle Heads, Tecnicrafts Swiss Collets and Guide Bushings, Henninger Spindle Speeders and AMF Cleaning and Marking tools, recently created a video highlighting the products they would have shown in their booth at IMTS this year.

Preben Hansen, company president, presented the various product lines Platinum Tooling offers and highlights the areas of expansion since the last IMTS show in 2018.  Platinum Tooling Technologies, Inc. has a wide selection of machine tool accessories for most machine brands.

Hansen demonstrated the u-tec® flexible changing system for Live Tools offered from their flagship brand, Heimatec.  The tool featured was an ER 32 output cross-working tool for a BMT style turret.  While standard ER 32 collets can be used in this tool, Hansen explained the beauty of the built-in changing system designed to receive a variety of adapters for different applications.  With this system, the customer realizes both flexibility and cost savings.

Due to the budgetary restraints caused by COVID-19, Hansen commented that many buyers are interested in buying tools that can help them do more with their existing machines, rather than investing in new equipment.  One example shown was a twin spindle tool which creates a second output from a single turret position.  Another tool featured was an adjustable angle tool that allows users to produce a feature on the workpiece with a compound angle without having to re-fixture the part.

In addition, Heimatec offers a wide range of Static Tools to complement their Live Tools.  This includes boring bar holders, facing holders, standard and half index turning tools as presented.  Other new developments from the company include CAPTO output tooling and Live and Static Tools for Citizen machines.  Platinum Tooling stocks many of these tools at their headquarters in Prospect Heights, Illinois.

The last tool highlighted from the Heimatec line was a Machining Center Angle Head weighing 12 pounds with an ER 25 output that can hold a 5/8” cutter.  At this weight, the tool can be used with almost any Automatic Tool Changers on the market.  This is just one of many Angle Head styles offered by Platinum Tooling.  As with Live Tools, most Angle Heads are designed with the u-tec® flexible changing system.

The Tecnicrafts line is another area of expansion featured by Platinum Tooling.  Collets and Guide Bushings for Swiss type CNC Lathes, specialty collets for CNC cutter grinders as well as 5C & 16C Collets are included in their selection.  These high-quality workholding tools are offered in a wide variety of styles and sizes.  Many popular items in inch and metric sizes are stocked at Platinum Tooling.

Speed Increasers and Custom Angle Heads from Henninger are also offered through Platinum Tooling.  Speeder types include mechanical, air, and motor driven.  Mechanical driven speed increasers provide rpm up to 50,000, while air and high frequency speeders offer rpm up to 80,000.

Lastly, Hansen introduced the Cleaning and part Marking tools supplied by AMF.  Typically used in toolholders utilizing ER Collets or Weldon clamping systems, these tools can be used independently or in conjunction with each other during the machining process.  The high-speed marking tool will permanently mark the workpiece while the cleaning tool washes away unwanted chips.  New for Platinum Tooling this year is the AMF gripper.  This product is operated pneumatically by compressed air or hydraulically with coolant via the machine spindle for repositioning the workpiece.

Platinum Tooling prides itself on representing the highest quality machine tool accessories in the marketplace.  They offer standard and custom tools throughout their product lines to help with the most challenging applications.

A new Platinum Tooling Image Catalog is now available upon request featuring all of the products lines shown in the video.

Kurt Machining Utilizes Live Tool Speed Increaser, Realizes 9x Tool Cost Savings in Less Than a Year

Minnesota CNC shop uses Heimatec speed increaser to up RPM and feed rate; significantly reduces cycle time on aluminum engraving application

Kurt Machining (Minneapolis, Minnesota) specializes in providing precision CNC machined parts, using state-of-the-art technologies and up to 5-axis machining.  Since 1952, this 110,000 sq. ft. shop has provided its customers in a variety of high-quality demand markets with components and welded assemblies.  These include aerospace, defense, semiconductor, energy, automotive and more.  A very flexible shop, Kurt produces parts ranging from micron-sized semiconductor components to 2000 lb. workpieces for the defense sector.

On a recent project, where 5000 pieces of 6060 aluminum were to be engraved on a Hwacheon horizontal turning center, Kurt Engineering Manager, Shawn Eisenshank, had concerns over the cycle times.  He turned to his local tooling distributor, Abrasive Specialists, Inc. (ASI) and their tooling partner, Platinum Tooling, for suggestions.  Leigh Kinnan of ASI worked with the local Platinum Tooling representative, Cody Papenfus, to test run a Heimatec speed increaser, with the goal of increasing RPM on the machine and decrease part cycle time, with a documentation of the potential savings.  After performing the calculations in consultation with Preben Hansen, president of Platinum Tooling and exclusive importer for Heimatec products in North America, it was determined a significant savings could be realized.

Detailing the application, ASI demonstrated that a 1:3 speeder, increased the spindle RPM enough that when coupled with the nearly 3X increase in the feed rate on the machine, would produce a significant improvement to the current machining cycle.  Calculating the reduction in machining cost per part and factoring the cost of the speed increaser, it was determined the use of the Heimatec product onboard the Hwacheon turning center would result in a 9X cost saving for the customer, in the first year’s production run on this engraved aluminum component.

As Shawn Eisenshank notes, “This is one of those classic scenarios, where the theoretical has proven out in practice, as we’ve seen exactly the results ASI and Platinum Tooling proposed in their test calculations.”

Cody Papenfus of Hexis in Plymouth, Minnesota, who is the area rep for Platinum Tooling adds, “We say we put our expertise to work at the spindle of the machine and, in this case, that’s exactly what happened.  The speed increaser performed as expected, the customer got the results promised and it was a win-win, for all.  We serve our customers for the long haul and successes like this one are the big reason.”

Kurt Machining performs both vertical and horizontal milling and turning, complex assemblies and weldments, delivering with rapid lead times.  CAD compatibility is offered for web-based communications and fully interactive manufacturing engagement for its customers.  The company performs contract manufacturing in high quantity as well as prototyping for new designs.  Kurt also performs impact extrusion, heat treating and cleanroom operations including ultrasonic cleaning of stainless steel and aluminum components and assemblies, with cleaning to Class 1000 with 100 protocol.  The company is ISO 9001:2015 and AS9100D plus NADCAP Certified.  Kurt Machining is quality certified by the U.S. Government to MIL-Q-9858 and MIL-I-45208.
