The Guill team at Interwire 2019

Guill Shines at Interwire

Guill Booth at Interwire 2019

Interwire, the largest and longest-running wire and cable show, took place between May 13 and May 16, at the World Congress Center in Atlanta, Georgia.  Guill Tooling & Engineering  had quite a turnout at their booth.  Company personnel were able share their knowledge and interact with many potential customers.

At booth #1511, Guill was showcasing some of its latest technology. Featured were the in-line 5 layer extrusion crosshead of Series 800, single-point concentricity extrusion crosshead and Bullet II extrusion head.

Guill’s 800 Series is designed to produce the highest quality, highest material-efficient OD tubing for automotive, medical, appliance and industrial applications. This series produces smooth extrusion and layer definition of fluropolymer and other materials for all multi-layer, multi-lumen medical tubing, as well as fuel line constructions, multi-layer PEX pipe and drip irrigation applications.

The single-point concentricity crosshead uses micro-fine adjustment screws for precise concentricity. This adjustment is a unique feature of the company for the extrusion of thin-walled jacketing and precision ID/OD tubing.  It not only accepts both vaccum and micro-air accessories, but is also ideal for pressure and sleeving applications.

Introduced in 2015, the Bullet was a new extrusion head with fixed center design, multi-port spiral flow design and gum space adjustment. There was no need for fastening hardware, so cleaning and restart were easier. The Bullet II allows quick tooling changes, as the tips remove from the back and the die removes from the front. Guill’s CAM LOCK® deflector removes and installs the deflector and tip with just half a turn. Hassle free air and vacuum connections are available, in addition to reduced downtime and lowered operating costs.  High-volume and low-volume applications are suitable for this crosshead.

Guill Booth at Chinaplast

Guill Tool & Engineering Exhibits at ChinaPlas

Guill Tool Booth at ChinaplasGuill Tool & Engineering, Rhode Island, a global manufacturer of extrusion tooling, recently exhibited at Chinaplas. Chinaplas is the world’s leading plastics and rubber tradeshow with over 160,000 visitors from around the globe. The show was held on May 21-24 in Guangzhou, China.

Guill is committed to expanding their business in Asia, and, according to Matt Christofaro, Sales Executive, this effort is one of the main reasons they attended the show. Guill has been seeking additional sales representatives in Asia for the last couple of years and met with a number of promising candidates while at the show. Christofaro discussed the effort to expand in Asia, stating that, “there is definitely huge potential here. Even a fraction of the market share could be huge.” He added that if Guill is serious about doing business in China, they must attend this show every year.

Tom Baldock, Sales Representative Manager, was pleased to have met with some potential Chinese customers that have Guill heads and would like to work directly with Guill as opposed to working through the OEM’s. Baldock said that “there are Chinese companies that want American technology, which is still perceived by many as the best technology available.”

Guill had an interpreter at the booth which enabled them to meet with a number of customers, large and small, in person at the show. This, according to Christofaro, “was great for both parties.” Christofaro also noted that “there are a lot of companies (many Chinese) with very impressive extrusion lines that were making product right there at the show.”

Guill products featured at Chinaplas were mainly medical tubing dies. Also shown was a customer sample of a transitional wound drain tubing. Attendees were impressed by the fact that it can be created using a continuous process. Guill had inquiries about their 5 and 6 layer automotive tubing. Booth panels showed that Guill also makes dies for products in other industries, such as wire & cable, hoses, corrugated tube, pipe, etc.

Guill Introduces Reciprocating Head

Automated extrusion process drastically changes the extruded profile

Guill Reciprocating HeadGuill Tool, a global manufacturer of extrusion tooling, has released its new reciprocating head. The traditional tip and die assembly is replaced with a linear reciprocating assembly that changes the tube’s profile within a given length. This process is repeated throughout a single extrusion run without interruptions. Cutting capability, in association with the extrusion speed, cuts the finished product to length.

While cost and value stream activities are reduced, quality is improved. Only one extrusion run is needed to produce a finished product, as opposed to multiple extrusion runs with tooling changes along with a manual assembly operation to connect different tubing shapes.  Guill’s new reciprocating head eliminates an assembly operation. It also eliminates in-process inventory. Thus, there is no need for storage of various tubing shapes and connectors needed for assembly, fulfillment of orders and replenishment of finished goods.

Furthermore, the reciprocating head eliminates a connecting piece, allows JIT production and products made-to-order. Lastly, it reduces total run time from receiving the order to shipping.

Guill Tool Launches In-House Rheology Lab

With the ability to test materials before they are extruded, Guill customers receive testing coupled with industry experience and shorter lead times

Guill Tool, manufacturers of extrusion tooling for the global market, has opened an in-house rheology laboratory, making it the only extrusion tooling manufacturer in the industry with such a capability. Seeking to obtain better results and minimize the time it takes between testing and production, Guill built its own rheology lab in their facility in West Warwick, Rhode Island, USA. The lab features several key machines that ensure optimum results, when testing materials, especially new compounds to be extruded.  The testing equipment includes a Hybrid Rotational Rheometer, a Differential Scanning Calorimeter, and a Thermal Conductivity Meter.

Third-party testing facilities are typically not experienced in extrusion processes.  Guill, however, can not only gather data the same way third-party testers can, but can also interpret that data as it applies specifically to extrusion.  Likewise, third-parties simply supply data, not recommendations.  Guill is now equipped to both test its customer’s materials and work with them to create extrusion tooling that will give them a competitive edge.  Accurate simulation and interpretation by extrusion experts greatly reduces the number of physical reworks needed, as the tooling has a greater chance of producing a good product at the outset. In-house testing also speeds up the turnaround on test results, reducing delays during the tool design process and offering better control over the processes and test parameters.

The new Guill rheology lab processes standard materials, custom formulae and it is equipped to mix materials. These materials include plastics, thermoplastic elastomers, all types of rubber and silicone. Information from the lab is transmitted directly to the Guill engineering department via computer link for review by the design team.

The lab will be offered for use by extruders and chemical formulators, among others in the industry.  Please contact Guill for full details.

Guill Announces New 800 Series Hybrid Extrusion Tooling

800 Series HybridGuill announces the introduction of a new version of its popular 800 series, known as 800 Series Hybrid. In some extrusion applications that utilize crossheads and inlines, layers of the exact same material are applied multiple times, using a single die. This method is used to reduce the propensity for errors caused by gels breaking through a thin wall, weld lines, inconsistent wall thickness, plus material and process variations. Additional errors include difficult-to-process materials and demanding applications where there is zero fault tolerance.

Seeking to design the next generation multi-layer die to overcome these challenges, the engineers at Guill looked for a way to incorporate this technology into an updated version of the 800 Series. This led to the creation of the 800 Series Hybrid. The inherent benefits of the 800 Series are retained, including compact design, low residence time and a common deflector bore that eliminates tolerance stack up. The challenge was to create a hybrid design that incorporates the benefits of layer overlapping, while reducing unnecessary complexity and making the technology more cost-affordable for customers. This was achieved by overlapping layers in each semi-deflector, using a single cone. The highly efficient design of the 800 Series Hybrid reduces cost and size, as opposed to other methods of overlapping layers.

Essential benefits of the 800 Series Hybrid include eliminating weld lines in materials through patented overlapping technology, producing a more consistent finished product; reduced sensitivity to changes in viscosity; reduced sensitivity to changes in line speed; myriad material and multi-layer application possibilities; works in all tubing and jacketing applications with a wide range of materials; low residence time; compact design and a low tolerance stack-up error factor, all resulting in improved concentricity.

The 800 Series Hybrid extrusion tool greatly reduces stagnation, because overlapping layers are more inherently balanced than single layers and also because each semi-deflector is “tuned to flush.” Conventional deflectors must simultaneously achieve a balance between flushing, balancing and eliminating the weld line. There is less difference between the slowest moving material and the fastest moving material in the deflector channels, thus making the viscosity more consistent in the deflector.
