Siemens Introduces Updated Converting Toolbox

Software solution combines maximum performance with minimal implementation time

Today’s converting industry requirements are continually increasing, due to higher production rates, more machine flexibility and optimum product quality, combined with new substrates and greater demand for fast changeovers. Industry-specific technologies also continue to demand more from the winding drive and automation systems. Siemens today announces its latest iteration of the popular Converting Toolbox to meet these challenges.   

The toolbox enables machine builders to achieve considerably faster time to market by reducing the time required for engineering, programming, commissioning and documentation as much as 80%.

The Siemens Converting Toolbox has separate modules for each of the Siemens product categories typically found on converting machines, including SIMOTION motion controllers, SINAMICS drives and SIMATIC PLCs.  SIMOTION is designed for high-performance motion control applications with centralized control in conjunction with the SINAMICS S120 drive system. SINAMICS is ideal for drive-based applications with process-related control implementation in the SINAMICS S120 drive system with graphical drag-and-drop programming. Lastly, the SIMATIC platform applies to centralized converting applications implemented in the PLC control to work in tandem with the SINAMICS S120 drive system.

Converting Toolbox for Simotion, Sinamics and SimaticComponents in the Converting Toolbox take the form of pre-programmed function blocks.  Sample applications demonstrate how each function can be efficiently and effectively incorporated into a machine design, whether a modification of a previous generation or an entirely new design. In addition, some applications are ready-to-use, after only minor modifications and include basic HMI functionality. Systems can be implemented in Ladder, Structured text or in a Graphical function block language.

Additional features of the Converting Toolbox include converting base applications such as: center winder, unwind flying splice control, sectional drive with tension/draw control, accumulator, rotary knife with print mark correction, flying saw, traversing control, synchronized multi axis drive control, load sharing, diagnostics Web pages, project generation tools and converting library process and logistic functions.  These function blocks can literally be cut and pasted into a new design, with minimal programming time.

Converting Toolbox Now Extended to Include 
PLC-based Solutions

Value-added converting solutions for both the machine and the plant

Siemens Industry, Inc. announced today the introduction of the Simatic® Converting Toolbox module, a PLC-based control solution used in applications with a PLC as the central control system in which process controls are implemented.

The Simatic module completes the application set that includes the Simotion® module, a group of high-performance motion control converting solutions, and the Sinamics® DCC (drive control chart) module with drive-based converting solutions.  It offers the capability to integrate full converting lines and machines centralized on the Simatic S7 PLC platform.  Functions include center winder, sectional drive control and a host of converting process and large functions.  Systems can be implemented in Ladder, structured text or in a graphical functional block language.

Machine builders are now able to achieve considerably faster time to market by reducing the time required for engineering, programming, commissioning and documentation, as much as 80 percent in some cases. It offers modular open functions, for items such as winding, laminating,
cross-cutting, calendaring, perforating, embossing, coating, flying saw, die cutting, traversing and more.

ATLANTA — Siemens Industry, Inc. announced today the introduction of the Converting Toolbox, a set of standardized automation tools for the integration of various machine components that previously had to be performed individually.  It simplifies web processing applications and offers greater flexibility for machine designers and builders of paper, film, foil and other converting machinery. It is completely scalable and is provided at no cost to qualified machine designers, builders and integrators.

The Converting Toolbox enables machine builders to achieve considerably faster time to market by reducing the time required for engineering, programming, commissioning and documentation, as much as 80 percent in some cases. It offers modular open functions, for items such as:

  • Center winder,
  • Flying splice controls,
  • Rotary knife with print mark correction,
  • Flying saw,
  • Traversing control,
  • Speed set-point cascade and more.

The Converting Toolbox components take the form of pre-programmed functions.  Sample applications demonstrate how each function can be efficiently and effectively implemented into a machine design.  Such sample applications are ready-to-use after only minor modifications and include basic HMI functionality.  This enables the machine function to be tested and optimized in a very short time frame.

When a functionality module needs to be modified, extended or changed, the Converting Toolbox’s completely open source code provides a wide and solid basis from which even the most specialized functions can be implemented quickly and easily.

Simotion®, the Siemens motion control system, is ideally suited as an operating platform for the Converting Toolbox because applications can be operated directly on an intelligent drive, very compactly and without need of an additional PLC. Simotion offers drive, controller and PC-based topologies.  The Converting Toolbox also includes drives-based solutions using Siemens Sinamics® Drive Control Chart (DCC) graphical programming language.
